Archidona Council expects to complete the expropriation tomorrow of 18 plots of land in the La Saucedilla area, close to the A-92M, ready for the construction of the new prison facility.
The whole area is 340,000 square metres and the prison will occupy 35,000 and 50,000 square metres. The expropriated land was once valued at €2.1 million.
The new prison is designed to ease the burden on Alhaurin de la Torre where 2,000 prisoners are currently incarcerated. Archidona prison will have 1,008 cells and will be capable of housing 2,000 guests.
Work on the new prison, with a budget of €102 million, could begin in early 2010 and the completion period has been set at 24 months. Construction will result in the creation of 850 jobs and once finished, the prison will employ 500 staff plus about 100 contract workers, such as cooks, nurses, sports monitors and other auxilliary staff.
