Antonio Mercero, ‘Hijo Adoptivo’ (Adopted Son) of Nerja, has been awarded the Honorary Goya 2009 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Spain for his outstanding lifetime contribution to the film industry.
Mercero, after whom the Burriana promenade is named, is most remembered for the hit TV series ‘Verano Azul’ which put Nerja well and truly on the map, but he has also been responsible for a great number of works during his long career and has won numerous awards.
Antonio Mercero directed several notable TV series such as ‘Crónicas de un pueblo’, ‘Turno de oficio’ and ‘Farmacia de Guardia’, the TV film ‘La Cabina’, for which he won an Emmy, and award winning fims such as ‘La guerra de papá’, ‘La hora de los valientes’ and ‘Cuarta planta’.
