The new Nerja History Museum could be included in the Red de Espacios Culturales de la Comunidad (Network of Cultural Spaces) in 2010 which would unlock the door to applications for official grants and financial aid and finally allow for the completion of the project.
The land for the museum, located in Plaza de España (formerly Paseo Nuevo) was provided by the Nerja Council with no charges being levied for several years. The Nerja Caves Foundation financed the building of the museum with a loan of €2.4 million.
All that remains is to actually furnish the building and fill it with exhibits, a project budgeted at €1.8 million. Once included in the Red de Espacios Culturales de la Comunidad, financial assistance could be available and we could actually see a completed museum.
Nerja Council has been advocating contact with the Ministries of Tourism and Culture for a long in order to unlock this avenue of financing for the museum but the Nerja Caves Foundation, controlled by the Opposition PSOE, appears to have been rather reluctant to pursue this approach.
