A 20 year old youth died at a company Christmas celebration after suffering a severe allergic reaction to nuts contained in the dessert.
The company were celebrating their annual Christmas meal at a restaurant in avenida José Ortega y Gasset in Málaga when the incident occurred.
All was going well until the dessert. The victim, one of 26 employees dining at the restaurant, had apparently told one of his colleagues of his allergy to hazelnuts, banana and chocolate but thought he would be okay with the flan.
After one spoonful, however, he suffered a severe reaction and became very ill. Within fifteen minutes he died from anaphylactic shock and when the Emergency Services arrived on the scene there was nothing they could do to keep him alive.
Although death from anaphylactic shock is rare in such cases, it is not unknown and this is the third such case in Málaga in the past few years.
