The Cabinet has approved the draft reform of the Civil Registration Act, an amendment aimed at reducing paperwork and enabling public access to information at any time and from anywhere.
The new register, in a large database, would replace the traditional Family Book with registration certificates being used instead.
The new system will make for easier access to records by judicial or other administrative bodies and reduce the necessity for people to make a personal appearance with such information in the majority of cases.
Copoes, where necessary, can be obtained by individuals via the internet. Over 68 million pages from existing books have already been scanned and it is hoped that the civil records – birth registration, marriage information etc – of all the Spanish population will be on the database during 2010.
