Two people have been arested in Sevilla province on suspicion of crimes against the historical heritage, namely robbing ancient Christian or Visigoth tombs.
SEPRONA officers on patrol near a farm in the Sierra Suroeste in Sevilla heard suspicious noises and went to investigate. They discovered two people manhandling what looked like a tomb which had been brought to the surface during the recent storms.
The robbers fled the scene. The SEPRONA officers notified the Guardia Civil who, in turn, contacted the Ministry of Culture as it was suspected that the site was of archaeological significance.
After taking statements from various witnesses, police traced the driver of a vehicle seen in the area and he and his passenger were questioned. The two men denied any involvement in the incident but were arrested when tools covered in mud from the site and boots were found in the vehicle.
