This week’s plenary session of the Council saw only 8 items discussed out of the 26 on the agenda, far less than normal. Five of the items were, however, unanimously approved by all parties.
Amongst the items given unanimous approval was a motion to congratulate Antonio Mercero for his Goya de Honor, a request to classify the Ermita de Las Angustias as a place of cultural interest (BIC) and a motion to request financial assistance to restore the roof of the church in Maro. Not the first time some of these items have popped up, and probably not the last.
After such a dynamic start, it was inevitable that proceedings would slow down a little and concensus would be lost. And it was.
A motion to sign an agreement for the cleaning of schools in the area was passed by majority, the PSOE seeking to qualify the agreement.
The PSOE voted against a motion to request funding from the Junta de Andalucia and the Provincial Council for the completion of the Nerja History Museum. The PSOE, of course, control the Nerja Caves Foundation and the museum is a Foundation project.
The Nerja Caves is very much a party political issue. Another motion, passed with a majority (PP) vote was a request for Angel Ramírez, PSOE leader and manager of the Nerja Caves Foundation, to cease having anything to do with the museum.
There have been recent calls, by the PP, for the resignation of Angel Ramírez as manager of the Nerja Caves Foundation and for him to concentrate on his political duties as Councillor and leader of the Opposition.
It would, of course, make far more sense and be more beneficial to the community if the Nerja Caves Foundation was run by someone who was dedicated and politically independent as much more could be achieved. However, we live in the real world.
