Hot on the heels of a report showing that, before too long, almost 32% of the population of Spain will be aged over 64 years, the Government is putting forward a proposal to amend the retirement age. The current retirement age is 65 years.
The issue has been debated since last April with the employers and the Bank of Spain coming out in favour of raising the retirement age, the Unions opposing such a move. The Government, however, is far from united on the issue at this stage.
Employers are requesting a rise to age 7o years, the Unions are requesting that it remains at 65 years, but neither body is likely to get what it wants. More likely is a rise to around 67 years.
