Today marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of the gateway between Spain and Gibraltar.
Access to Gibraltar was sealed by Franco in 1969 to punish the United Kingdom. One of the first acts of the government of Felipe González was to reopen the link. First it was just pedestrians, then cars.
During the closure, families were separated and Gibraltar had to receive major injections of capital to compensate for the financial damage caused to the people and the economy.
In 2006, relations between Spain and the UK improved even further with an agreement being reached for the joint use of the airport and today there are regular meetings between the politicians of Gibraltar, the UK and Spain.
