Following the ruling by the European Court of Human rights on the issue of independence for Torre del Mar, the Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, María Salomé Arroyo (PSOE), says the Council will pursue its current path of decentralisation of the city’s administration which will give Torre del Mar, amongst others, more independence.
The appeal to the EHCR was brought by the Independent Panel on the grounds that not allowing Torre del Mar to be independent was a violation of the human rights of its residents. The ECHR, however, disagreed, and made it clear that there are no more legal avenues to be pursued on this question, the EHCR ruling being final.
A political solution, though, is a possibility, with all those involved havingagreed to abide by the decision of the EHCR.
The IU spokesman, Salvador Marin, said that his party would respect the EHCR ruling but urged the Independent Panel to continue their work.
The decentralisation of administrative functions within the municipality of Vélez-Málaga will mean that representatives from the different towns will no longer have to travel to the central Town Hall in order to meet and manage the affairs of the individual towns.
