The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has been responding to recent statements relating to the proposed sewage works, requesting that be it in phases, stages, episodes or chapters, the most important thing is to get the project started.
The mayor criticised what he sees as a lack of understanding between various administrations and public bodies involved in the project, all of which are PSOE controlled.
José Alberto Armijo highlighted a recent instance where the Junta de Andalucia submitted a draft proposal to the Ministry of Environment which was rejected by the Department of Coasts in Madrid even though there was no objection from the Málaga Department of Coasts.
The rejection concerns the placement of the residual water collectors. The proposal was for a 3,500 metre underwater pipeline from the rio Chillar area to Burriana beach, something Madrid objected to.
On the question of the rejected sewage plant offer by the Aznar government in 2001, José Alberto Armijo said that what was on offer was a small, open plant which was deemed insufficient for the needs of the community.
The mayor took the opportunity to say that the socialists took no interest in the sewage plant project until the PP came to power and suggests that the PSOE stop dwelling on the past, stop engaging in political rhetoric and look to the future by getting on with the project.
Probably good advice for both sides.
The mayor offered his full co-operation in the project while expressing his deep concern about the continued delays and, although agreeing that the Andalucian Water Agency is in the best position to judge matters, he believes that tendering and carrying out the project in phases would be like having a car with no wheels.
