Official figures just released show that there has been a significant drop in the number of road traffic accidents and less people have been denounced for not wearing a crash helmet.
During 2009, there were 44 road traffic accidents in Nerja, 26 (35%) less than during 2008. Councillor Jonathan Méndez puts this down to the identification of accident black spots, better road signs and various other measures.
A total of 185 cars and 40 motorcycles were removed from the streets, 153 of the cars being voluntary removal by the owners after being warned. This comes after the Trafico department took over control of ‘municipal waste. In 2008, only 84 cars were removed from the streets.
Increased focus on improper parking, including in loading zones, has led to a decrease in the number of tickets actually being issued, down from 3,156 in 2008 to 2,409 in 2009.
The removal of vehicles via tow truck has fallen by 65% and the number of people sanctioned for not wearing a crash helmet has decreased by 85%, both being attributed to more ‘awareness’ on the part of the general public.
