Even though the Ministry of Tourism, through the Sustainable Tourism Initiative, is financing 70% of the restoration costs of the Eagle Aquaduct, the Council today approved a motion to request that the Ministry of Culture share the remaining 30% of the costs with the Nerja Council.
The motion was passed with only the votes of the majority Partido Popular as the opposition parties had already left the room.
The spokesman for the Council, José Miguel García, is reported as calling the latest walkout a ‘disgraceful spectacle’, saying that it was brought about by the failure of the PSOE leader Angel Ramírez to secure financing for the Nerja Caves Museum when the Nerja and other Councils were successfully managing to secure financing for important projects, such as the Eagle Aquaduct.
It is not the first time the PSOE and IU members have left before the end of a plenary session, and probably won’t be the last.
Other important motions approved at the plenary session, and this time by all parties, were requests to the Junta de Andalucia to implement a ‘Punto de Encuentro Familiar’ (Family Meeting Point) and to implement measures to preserve and promote flamenco.
