There are, on average, around 2,000 earthquakes in Andalucia each year, although the vast majority are never felt by the public due to their low intensity.
Andalucia is the most active tectonic zone in the Iberian peninsular which makes these earthquakes a very ‘normal’ situation and occurrence.
The biggest quake in Andalucia in recent times was centred southwest of Cabo San Vicente on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. The quake, on December 17th 2009, measured 6.2 on the Richter scale and affected six provinces; Huelva, Cádiz, Sevilla, Málaga, Córdoba and Jaén.
