The company Vías y Construcciones S.A. has been awarded the contract to build a second prison in Málaga to be located in the town of Archidona.
In September, the Council of Ministers approved the expropriation of over 34,000 square metres of land, consisting of eighteen private plots, after the failure of negotiations with the landowners to agree to voluntary sale. The value of the land, which is designated as rural, is said to be around €2.1 million.
The prison will be called ‘Málaga II’ and will take some of the inmates currently in Alhaurin de la Torre prison which has a far larger number of prisoners than was originally intended and has been the subject of repeated complaints relating to overcrowding.
The new prison will cost in the region of €100 million, have 1,008 cells, employ 500 full-time staff and around 100 contract workers, such as cooks, cleaners etc.
