Street vendors in Andalucia are protesting against a new European directive relating to their profession and they are holding a rally outside the parliament building in Sevilla.
Currently, street vendors pay a few hundred euros per month for their site and often have their site assigned for years. Businesses and sites are also often handed down from generation to generation, the licences being automatically renewed each year.
The new European Directive does not allow the automatic renewal of licences, vendors having to go every year to a public meeting where, basically, a matter of ‘luck’ will determine their future and the future of their (family) business.
The vendors are seeking legal security under the Ley del Comercio Ambulante de Andalucía (Andalucia Trade Act) to ensure continuity and stability for their chosen profession.
