Renovation of Plaza de la Merced in Málaga could start in May

The renovation of Plaza de la Merced in Málaga could begin towards the end of May this year and, if all goes to plan, be finished by December.

The renovations to this important and historical square are one of the flagship projects of Mayor Francisco de la Torre as he looks to the elections in 2011.

It is hoped that the €5 million project will be presented in March, put out to tender in April, started in May and completed by December. The main thrust of the project is to make the square one level, with easy access for all, as well as to modernise and improve its aesthetic value.

Initial objections by local residents have been put down to ‘ignorance of the project as a whole’ and the Council is confident of changing local opinion through a series of meetings in which they will explain the project in detail.

The expansion of the pedestrianised area has led to concerns from bar and restaurant owners regarding terraces, especially on the north side, at a time when the survival of many of these places hangs in the balance due to the current economic recession.

Some of the existing trees in the square are destined to remain, but others are currently set to be replaced. Parking looks set to suffer with less loading, unloading and residential spaces in order to enhance the pedestrian character of the area.
