The trial is scheduled to start today of nine people from Ronda, five of them police officers, on charges of bribery, corruption, failure to prosecute crimes and fraud.
The events took place between 2003 and 2007 and relate to prostitution and drugs trafficking. The prosecution is requesting a total of 39 years in prison for four National Police officers and one Guardia Civil officer.
Among the accused is the former head of the National Police station in Ronda. The Chief Inspector and Deputy Inspector and Head of the Immigration and Documentation section are said to have always been aware of procurement activities and drug trafficking in the area but failed to carry out any prosecutions.
It is also alleged that two National Police officers demanded €600 a month from a club owner, a Moroccan national illegally in the country, under threat of prosecution if he did not comply.
The former police chief is also accused of visiting certain establishments in the city where he ordered drinks and sexual services for which he never paid. It is also alleged that he offered to help a woman obtain the necessary papers to stay in the country and work in exchange for sex.
The trial is expected to continue until March 11th.
