Two brothers, both aged two years, died last night in a fire at their home in Almendralejo, Badajoz.
The fire started at around 20:50 in a house on calle Encrucijada, on the corner with calle José Morán Durán and spread rapidly.
In the house at the time of the fire was a mother and her triplets. The mother managed to get to one of the triplets and get him to safety but was unable to return for the others, such was the intensity of the fire. At one stage the roof of the building collapsed, blocking access to everyone, even the firefighters.
Once the fire was quelled, firefighters were able to enter the building but could do nothing to save the lives of the two young boys.
The mother suffered a severe nervous breakdown and after first being treated at the local Health Centre was then admitted to the hospital in Almendralejo. The father of the triplets died last August in a motorcycle accident.
