An historic storm brought chaos to much of Cataluña yesterday as snow caused the closure of many roads, cut power lines and left people stranded and unable to get home.
Around 220,000 people and 120 municipalities in Girona are without power, 174 roads are affected by snow with 39 being closed and people in Barcelona have had to be offered accommodation as they have been unable to get home.
Motorists found themselves stranded on the roads as the snows hit the area and made many roads impassable except with snow chains. Thousands of lorries were forced to abandon their journeys.
The snow was up to 60 cm deep in places with occasional drifts reaching three metres.
