According to a report by the Civil Protection in Vélez-Málaga, the beaches in the municipality have lost around 1,184,000 cubic metres of sand during the storms of the past few days and the priority now is to try and get the beaches into good shape for the upcoming Easter holidays.
In Torre del Mar, the sea has reclaimed more than 280,000 cubic metres of sand and waves have caused extensive damage to some of the beach bars near the mouth of the rio Vélez. The bars are about 40 metres from the shore!
In Mezquitilla, the beach has all but disappeared and waves have been washing over the N.340 coast road. Part of the sea wall has also been destroyed during the storms.
In Almayate, the loss of sand is estimated at 200,000 cubic metres and much rubbish has been washed up onto the beach.
The cost of repairing the 22 kilometres of beaches in the municipality has been estimated at €450,000.
