Yesterday was a tragic day in Vélez-Málaga with two people losing their lives in work-related accidents, one in Caleta and one in Vélez-Málaga itself.
At around 08:00 yesterday morning, a 68 year old sailor lost his life after falling overboard from a trawler, apparently after having suffered a dizzy spell. He was very quickly rescued from the water but the captain and crew were unsuccessful in their attempts to revive him.
An autopsy is being carried out at the Institute of Forensic Medicine to determine the exact cause of death. The sailor was retired and it is not known whether he was actually working on the trawler or was merely a passenger accompanying friends while they worked.
In another tragic incident, a 43 year old construction worker died after falling from the second floor of a building in calle Malagueñas.
The incident occurred just after 15:00 yesterday while the man was working on a project in calle Malagueñas. The man apparently standing next to a winch machine when he was struck on the head by a bucket of building materials, causing him to fall a distance of about 10 metres.
The Emergency Services spent almost an hour trying to revive the man but without success.
