A 21 year old prisoner died in his cell at Alhaurín de la Torre prison as a result of the adverse effect of drugs hidden in his stomach.
The prisoner, of Moroccan origin but with Spanish nationality, was found to have a dozen capsules of hashish pollen in his stomach. His cell mate reported that the youth was ill and lying on the cell floor. He died a short while later.
The deceased, with a record of petty crime, had only been in Alhaurín de la Torre prison for 48 hours. It was a stopover between Melilla and Puerto III prison in Cádiz. He had been taken to Melilla to appear in court and was on his way back to Cádiz to serve out the remainder of his sentence.
An investigation is underway to determine when and how he was able to swallow and conceal the drugs as, theoretically, he was either under guard or in his cell at all times.
