Nine towns in the district of Antequera do not have water processing plants, which means that 50% of the municipalities are dumping untreated residual waters into the rivers in the area.
Some treatment plants are under construction, some are ready to go out to tender, but it remains that Teba, Alameda, Villanueva de Algaidas, Villanueva del Rosario, Almargen, Sierra de Yeguas, Mollina, Cuevas de San Marcos and Villanueva del Trabuco are without treatment plants.
Plants in Teba, Alameda, Villanueva de Algaidas and Villanueva del Rosario are currently under construction and the one in Villanueva de Algaidas could even be ready by the summer, to quote a well-known phrase in politics, according to the Mayor, José Cabrera.
Almargen, Sierra de Yeguas, Mollina, Cuevas de San Marcos and Villanueva del Trabuco are not quite at the construction stage. Some towns in the Antequera district either haver their own processing plant or share with a neighbouring municipality.
A report indicates that 81% of the length of the rivers in the area risk falling short of the targets for 2015 set by the Water Framework Directive and the waters have significant levels of contamination.
