The Council has decided to relocate the carriage horses, so long a part of the scene on the Balcon de Europa, and the carriage owners are none too happy about the situation.
The owners have been protesting to the Council about the decision to move them from their traditional site and will continue to protest as they believe the proposed change will ruin their livelihoods and bring about the end of the horse-drawn carriages.
The proposed new site is near the Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos at the south-western end of town near Torrecilla beach.
The carriages were temporarily relocated to the Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos in the past when renovations were being carried out on the Balcon de Europa and, according to the owners, they barely managed to survive. Now, with a recession, the situation could be totally different.
The Council wants to make the Balcon de Europa a completely pedestrianised area. In addition, a police report has warned of the danger to pedestrians of maintaining the carriages on the Balcon de Europa, although the carriage owners believe this makes no sense.
Presumably, then, delivery lorries will not be allowed access to the businesses on the Balcon due to those same safety concerns!

Yet another stupid elf and safety thingy!!There is more danger from vehicles coming down into the Balcon area than from the horses. Soon walking on the Balcon will be stopped-part of this stupid H&S.

Myself family and friends visit Nerja for a holiday every year and like many tourists look forward to seeing the carriages and horses on the Balcon. They are a major attraction for tourists and being on the Balcon, easy to locate.Much safer than the vans and delivery vehicles that come down to the Balon area.Let the carriage owners continue to give a great service to the tourists from the Balcon of which they have been a major part for many years.
Council, have a sensible rethink before you lose something of value to the town.
