The proposed pedestrianisation of the Balcon de Europa and area will not only see the relocation of the carriage horses to Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos, but also the elimination of all road traffic, the removal of loading and unloading areas and the relocation of the tourist train stop from Plaza Cavana to avenida Castilla Perez (on the corner with calle Antonio Millón).
Thus, the bottom of calle Pintada and calle Cristo, calle Puerta de Mar, calle Carmen and Plaza Cavana will be totally traffic-free under the new proposals. It has not been specifically mentioned, but this would also seem to mean that calle Carabeo would no longer be a through road as it ends at the bottom of Cristo and Pintada.
The Council intends to create new loading and unloading areas in calle Diputación, calle Cristo, calle Los Huertos and Huertos de Carabeo. There will also be new parking areas for scooters and mopeds.

the council have really lost it now. yes the balcon will be totally trafic free but also devoid of any character, what next, ban the tourists and keep them off the purely sterile balcon, maybe they could leave overshoes at either end of the balcon. does this council see anything touristy as something of an anti-christ, it is nerjas life blood. wake up and smell the coffee before it is too late.

Completly agree with Ken, the council should wake up before it is too late. For a PP administration to be damaging business is plain stupid, they shouild encourage it. What next, supply slippers tp walk on the Balcon.Get real!! Snr Armijo

As someone who has to make deliveries within this area I cannot see why there cannot be some through traffic at certain hours. (Firstly I hoped this was a joke (April Fool) but assume this is not so. I agree the whole thing is ludicrous, and makes logistics difficult for so many people. Imagine the difficulty of delivering goods to somewhere such as the Balcon Hotel. When the Carrabeo opens again for traffic where will the traffic go? Will Calle Cristo once again become negotiable? The council have definately lost the plot!

I have hired a horse drawn carriage from the Balcon on few occasions while on holidays in nerja over the last 20 yrs but I cant see how they add anything to the Balcon and in fact they are somewhat dangerous so for that reason I agree with the proposed new location

The “wally wagon” and the horse drawn carriages are part of the charm of Nerja. I hope they do not try and sanitise the Balcon / Plaza Cavana area. This is definitely a step backwards and will harm the character of the place and its tourist appeal.

Diana says:
I think the “wally wagon” is a blight on Plaza Cavana. It’s noisy, ugly and blocks any view of the plaza as a whole- whether you’re having a drink in the plaza and want to see the street life passing by, or just walking by the plaza and would like to see the plaza itself rather than that hulking blue thing.
