A man who suffered from Diogenes syndrome and who was injured in a fire at his home on March 30th has died at the Carlos Haya hospital in Málaga.
The victim, M.R.T., was admitted to hospital with burns to 15% of his body after a fire at his home in calle Dolores Cortés in the Ciudad Jardín of Málaga on March 30th. He required mechanical ventilation as the incident had affected his respiratory tract but, although in a serious condition, he was stable.
However, his condition deteriorated yesterday and he was admitted to Intensive Care where he later died.
Diogenes syndrome, also known as senile squalor syndrome, is a disorder characterized by extreme self-neglect, domestic squalor, social withdrawal, apathy, tendency to hoard rubbish (syllogomania) and lack of shame.
