An earthquake measuring 4.8 in the Richter scale was felt in various parts of Andalucia just after midnight but there are no reports of any damage, material or personal.
The quake occurred at 00:08 at a depth of 610 kilometres with the epicentre being between the towns of Nigüelas and Lecrín in Granada province. It was felt, although weakly, in Benalmádena, Málaga City, Jerez, Jaén, Estepona, Cádiz and Fuengirola.
The Emergency Services in Málaga received about twenty calls, some of them from people in high-rise blocks who were scared by the vibrations but most being purely requests for information on the quake. It is thought that most of the calls were motivated by the current climate of fear surrounding the phenomenon after the recent devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.
