Police have seized 1,425 kilos of cocaine hidden inside boxes of bananas from Ecuador, one pallet being found in Sevilla and one in Alicante.
The drugs arrived in Sagunto, Valencia, and were then shipped to two separate warehouses, one in Sevilla and one in Alicante. After their arrival in the country, no drug dealers ever turned up to collect their shipments.
The seizures were made possible by two previous drugs operations, one in Valencia and one in Madrid, in which a total of 305 kilos of cocaine were found in shipments of bananas. Police began monitoring fruit shipments from South America, particularly from Ecuador, and at the beginning of April noted three possibly suspect shipments.
The police monitored the suspected shipments but no-one turned up to collect them so the shipments were opened and the drugs confiscated.
