The 163rd April Feria is underway in Sevilla after the ceremonial switching-on of the illuminations, 370,000 bulbs lighting up fifteen streets, all of which are named after famous bullfighters.
The feria is a week of fun with around one million people usually attending the festivities.
The Sevilla feria came into being on March 5th 1447 by decree of Queen Isabel II and was originally a three day cattle fair created for two councillors, Catalán Narciso Bonaplata and Basque José María Ybarra. Corrals were erected and these eventually evolved into the modern day ‘casitas’ or marquees.
