The Councillor for Public Health, Andrés Márquez, has announced the start of a campaign to control the number of pigeons in the municipality, particularly in areas such as the Balcon de Europa and the Narixa college.
The campaign is the result of numerous complaints from residents, visitors, schools and housing associations. The campaign will last three to six months and will involve the placing of numerous cages around the municipality.
The Councillor hopes that this will end the potential health and hygiene problems associated with the proliferation in the numbers of these birds.
The last major health and hygiene campaign, carried out with ‘vigour’, was against the increasing amounts of dog poo to be found littering the streets of Nerja. This was such an underwhelming success that the problem is now twice as bad as it ever was.
