The beaches in Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo and Torrox could end up without the marker buoys this summer due to accumulated debts for this service between 2007 and 2009. Only two municipalities, Nerja and Rincón de la Victoria, are fully paid up and guaranteed to be provided with the service.
According to the Mancommunidad de la Costa del Sol-Axarquía, Vélez-Málaga owes €150,000, Torrox owes €100,000 and Algorrobo owes €40,000.
The company Ecolmare has been awarded the contract to install the marker buoys along the coast and they will begin with the ‘good guys’, Nerja and Rincón de la Victoria, in order to allow time for the others to settle their debts.
Ecolmare has also been awarded the contract, valued at €459,660, to clean the coastline of the flotsam and other gunge during the summer season, namely from June 15th until September 30th. There will be 11 boats operating along the coast, the same number as last year.
