Police in Torre del Mar yesterday rescued six dogs locked in a trailer all day in the blazing sun, causing them to suffer dehydration.
Police were called to the plaza de la Paz in Torre del Mar after a local resident reported that a trailer containing several dogs had been parked in the area since the morning and that the animals were obviously in distress.
At around 16:00, a concerned local resident had unhitched the trailer from a 4×4 and moved it into shade. The authorities checked the trailer and decided to have it towed away to the police station. Due to the perceived risk to the animals, the police then cut open the trailer. There were two medium-sized dogs and four puppies inside.
At around 18:00, the owner of the animals appeared at the police station and stated that he had been given the animals that same morning and was intending to get them vaccinated and chipped.
As the man could provide no documentation relating to the animals to prove that they were his and because the situation could constitute a crime of animal cruelty, he was informed that the dogs would be taken to an animal reception centre.
