The romerias in La Viñuela, Los Romanes and Los Gómez took place last weekend and were attended by around 5,000 pilgrims. La Viñuela Council installed several cesspools to take care of the inevitable ‘residual waters’ from mobile toilets and the like.
Residents, however, have complained that the Council should have installed cisterns to prevent the discharge of sewage into the area around the lake, a water resource supplying half the villages of the Axarquia with drinking water.
The cesspools were placed and reportedly discharged within 100 metres of the lake and the local residents are none too happy.
