Police were alerted to the presence of a stationary vehicle, engine still running, at an intersection in Vélez-Málaga and went to investigate.
When they arrived on the scene, the vehicle was still at the intersection, not moving, and with the engine still running. The window of the vehicle was wound down and there was the driver, fast asleep at the wheel, no seatbelt fastened and smelling strongly of alcohol.
It took several attempts to wake the driver, a resident of the village of Lagos, not that it made much difference as he could hardly speak and what he did say was unintelligible.
The police officers managed to get the driver out of the car and took him to the local clinic to be treated for serious alcohol poisoning.
The car was towed away and impounded. Once back at the police station, officers tried to breathalyse the driver but he kept falling asleep and they had to give up their efforts, noting him as ‘unable to blow’. He has been scheduled for a speedy trial.
A relative of the man was summoned to take the inebriated driver home.
