In the wake of the current financial crisis, Torremolinos Council has decided upon a package of measures to reduce spending on traditional festivals and fiestas.
The popular local festivals, or ‘veladillas’, organised in many of the towns and villages throughout the municipality will now only last for one day instead of being held over a whole weekend.
The ferias, such as La Carihuela and San Miguel, will last one day less than normal. La Carihuela, in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, will now only be a three day event and will be held between July 15th and July 17th.
The feria of San Miguel, the patron saint of the town, will be from September 29th to October 2nd, also one day less than normal. The procession will be on September 26th.
The first ‘Veladilla’ takes place in the San Miguel district and is being organised by the Council and local organisations. It starts at 21:30 in the Plaza Rio Aguas and is being seen as a test of the new rules.
Further ‘Veladillas’ will follow in Los Álamos, Montemar, El Calvario, Cantarranas, El Higueralillo, La Colina and Playamar.
Another cost-cutting measure will see the use of ‘background’ music as opposed to the hiring of a group or band for such events.
