Falling prices, reduced consumption and frozen lamb being imported from Australia and New Zealand are all contributing to the decline of the sheep industry in Andalucia and in Los Pedroches, Córdoba, more than 400 livestock farms have disappeared.
On Saturday, Los pedroches was the scene of the second Day of the Lamb, an event designed both to celebrate and to highlight the plight of the industry.
In less than three years, the Andalucian sheep herds have been reduced by 100,000 head and now stand at 600,000 animals.
Farmers are calling on the government to help the industry and for the EU to act to control inferior imports being sold at virtually the same price.
