The number of international tourists arriving in Andalucia in May was 789,.846, an increase of 6.5% over the same month last year. This was despite almost 5,000 flights being cancelled as a result of the Icelandic volcano eruption.
In Spain as a whole, however, the increase was only 1.1%.
During the first five months of this year, 17.8 million tourists visited Spain, a decrease of 2.8% on 2009, with the government attributing much of the decline to the volcanic ash scenario. In April, when airports were closed for six consecutive days, visitor numbers fell by 13%.
