The environmental group GENA-Ecologists in Action, has complained to Vélez-Málaga Council about the inappropriate use of the cycle lanes in the municipality, pointing out the potential for serious accidents or injuries.
Whilst commending the introduction of the cycle lanes in the municipality, GENA-Ecologists in Action say that a number of measures need to be taken by the Council to prevent potential hazards to pedestrians and cyclists. These measures include:
- An urgent awareness campaign to warn the public that bicycle lanes are exclusively for bicycles.
- The drafting of a specific municipal ordinance relating to cycle paths.
- An information campaign on the proper use of cycle lanes.
- Regular police patrols to warn pedestrians who stray onto cycle paths.
The group highlights a number of frequent and dangerous occurrences, such as:
- Walking on the cycle paths with dogs not on a leash.
- Jogging along cycle paths, particularly when the joggers are wearing earphones.
- Pedestrians pushing prams along cycle paths.
- Allowing minors to play on the cycle paths.
