Last Sunday, several bathers on the beach in Torre del Mar managed to save a mother and her ten year old son who got into difficulties due to strong currents and heavy waves in the area.
The pair had been swimming when the boy appeared to be having difficulty reaching the shore. The mother tried to help her son but the waves and current were too strong.
Three bathers managed to retrieve the mother from the water but were unable to reach the boy. Hugo Ortiz, a Paraguayan national, then entered the water and managed to reach the boy and slowly they edged towards the shore. The waves threw them against the rocks but they eventually emerged from the water in one piece.
Yesterday, at the Town Hall, the mother, María Teresa Martínez, publicly thanked all those who had participated in the rescue.
