Police in Fuengirola are stepping up alcohol controls on motorists during the summer months, particularly in the centre of town and around the promenade.
Taking advantage of a recent increase in manpower, 23 new officers joining the force on Friday, checkpoints will be set up at random points throughout the city every Friday and Saturday night.
These checkpoints will be in streets wide enough to allow controls without disrupting the normal traffic flow, the authorities keen to avoid causing a problem in order to solve a problem.
There will also be increased speed controls in Fuengirola during the summer, although these will not be carried out with the same ‘vigour’ as the alcohol controls.
A campaign in June by the Local Police and the DGT resulted in 2,229 motorists being monitored, of whom 80 were penalised for excess alcohol and 300 for speeding.
