The village of Lagos in the municipality of Vélez-Málaga is now connected to the main collector of the new water treatment plant in Torrox, which means that raw sewage will no longer be discharged into the river and it should see an end to the pollution of the beaches.
The new pumping station in Lagos connects to the water treatment plant in Torrox by means of a series of pipes running parallel to the N-340.
During the construction of the pumping station, sewage in the area was diverted to a large septic tank near the Rio Lagos. The accumulated waste was then transferred by lorry to Mezquetilla.
However, it was a very basic system and the inability to remove all the waste in a timely manner often led to raw sewage entering the river and flowing down to the beach.
