The municipality of Iznate celebrated the XII Fiesta de la Uva Moscatel at the weekend, with 1,000 kilos of grapes and 200 litres of Muscatel wine being provided for visitors.
The fiesta began in 1999 and is always held on the first Saturday in August. It is now listed as a fiesta of tourist interest by the Málaga Provincial Council.
Part of the celebrations included a Ruta Gastronómica (Gourmet Route), with almost the entire municipality taking part. Stalls were set up on virtually every street with a variety of local dishes, cakes and desserts on offer.
The Muscatel grape was once a major part of the economy of the Axarquia. Nowadays, however, it is grown mainly to preserve the tradition rather than for economic reasons.
