Parking in the centre of Ronda is a little easier now as a new car park for 200 cars and 30 motorcycles has been opened on the site of the former Concepción military barracks. Parking is free.
The demolition of the old Concepción military barracks was not without controversy, with objections on a number of grounds.
The barracks were actually located on a plot of land which still belongs to the Ministry of Defence but it was the Council who paid €600,000, funds from the second Plan Zapatero, for the demolition. This did not sit well with the opposition parties.
There were also complaints that this historic building could have been adapted for other uses rather than being demolished.
However, the barracks have gone and the area is now a car park, at least for the time being, with two entry and exit points in calle Lauría and plaza Concepción García Redondo. It also has, in principle, two attendants.
Future proposals for the site include a large recreational area with a square and an underground parking facility, although such projects will not be considered until the next legislature.
