The death toll on Spanish roads during the summer period, July 1st to August 31st, was 364, the lowest figure since 1962 and 4.21% down on 2009.
In August, the death toll was under 200 for the first time since the collection of such statistics began. There were 83 million journeys of 100 kilometres or more, 3.2 million less than in July and August 2009 but this apparently had no effect on the number of accidents as there were a similar amount of journeys in 2008 but 83 more fatalities.
There was also a sharp decline in the number of accidents involving drivers aged between 15 years and 24 years. However, there was increase in the number of children who died in car accidents, 23 this year as opposed to 12 in 2009. In 43% of these cases the children were not restrained by seat belts or other means.
