The Junta de Andalucia has opened sanction proceedings against Ejido Medio Ambiente, the company responsible for an organic waste plant in Almeria which has been burning since August 7th, generating some 1,700 complaints by local residents and farmers.
Due to the vast quantity of waste material at the plant, the fire has been smouldering for over a month now.
The Junta de Andalucia is temporarily rescinding the licence granted to Ejido Medio Ambiente for the management of organic waste and has requested that they take steps to extinguish the fire.
The company now has a month to respond to the report by the Junta de Andalucia and they could face a fine of between €30,000 to €1.2 million.
Meanwhile, the Court Number 4 in El Ejido is investigating whether the complaints made by residents, which include damage to crops and property, are directly related to the fire.
There have been five fires at the waste management plant since 2002.
