The end of long walks with heavy bags is nigh for passengers arriving at Málaga airport who wish to take the train into the city centre, either to connect with the AVE high-speed train service or continue their onward journey by other means.
It is not the introduction of lighter bags but the inauguration, yesterday, of the new subterranean station near T3 that will make all the difference.
The Málaga-Fuengirola C1 line will now pass through the new station, situated just thirty metres from the terminal, and the journey time to María Zambrano railway station in Málaga city centre will be about fifteen minutes.
However, the new suburban train station, forming part of the new Terminal T3 building, will have provisional access only from the exterior arrivals area until additional building work to connect the terminal and the new station is completed.
Further improvements will include a second track which will then allow for a more frequent service, probably every 20 minutes rather than the current 30 minutes.
The old rail tracks are due to be covered later this month in preparation for the construction of the third runway at the airport.
