Much of Coín cemetery has been virtually in darkness since last Thursday after two thefts of electric cables, the first such robberies in the area and only a week after the authorities reported a 30% drop in the crime rate in the municipality.
The first robbery took place on Thursday night, the thieves entering the cemetery over the back wall. They stole cabling worth around €3,000.
In the early hours of Monday morning, the rest of the cabling was stolen, also valued at around €3,000. The Council will now have to replace the whole cable structure. The Council plans to upgrade the system to make such robberies more difficult.
The outdoor patio and the niches are in total darkness but the mortuary and offices are functioning normally.
