The indoor swimming pool now has a new system to disinfect the water by means of ultraviolet radiation, thus reducing the amount of chlorine needed in the water.
The change was made following requests by parents and members of the Municipal School of Swimming and other pool users who wanted to see a reduction in chlorine levels in the water. The new system cost €40,000 to install.
Disinfection by ultraviolet radiation is a physical process and does not alter the chemical composition of the water or its taste and colour. The process is said to be completely safe (one should hope so), efficient, economic and environmentally friendly.
The process disinfects 100% of the water without causing the customary odour or eye irritation to swimmers.
