After four years of uninterrupted work in Torrox (as opposed to 40 years of uninterrupted dithering with neighbouring Nerja), the new, and second, Residual Water Treatment Station (EDAR) is in the final phase of testing and is already operating at 80% capacity.
The new sewage plant, in combination with the existing facility, will have the capacity to cover (although not literally) a population of around 57,000. Torrox itself has a current population of roughly 20,000.
The plant will also cover the neighbouring towns of Lagos and Algarrobo in the municipality of Vélez-Málaga. The new facility also incorporates a tertiary system of purification, with a deposit of 5,000 cubic meters of recycled water, which can be reused for agricultural irrigation and golf courses.
The project has cost €26.1 million and following the successful completion of the testing phase, the plant should be officially inaugurated in 2011.

Just been to burriana beach with my wife (26/02/2011). She went in for a swim with her wet-suit on. She came out quickly after swimming 20 yrds and pointed to the long slick of raw sewage floating near the shore. Disgusting. We need a daily report of the sea quality to try and get this plant built asap.
